What’s the easiest icing recipe ever? Powdered sugar icing! This icing is the type you drizzle on cookies, muffins or Bundt cakes to give them a little flair. It is just two ingredients and comes together in a flash. Alex and I have used this icing on both our pumpkin oatmeal cookies and almond thumbprint cookies, and it adds just the right flourish. There’s also an easy vegan variation. Ready to see how it’s done?

How to make powdered sugar icing: it’s as easy as 1, 2…!

Yep, there’s actually not a third step to this powdered sugar icing. All you have to do is two easy steps! Here’s what to do (or see the full recipe below):

  • Mix together powdered sugar and milk. We usually do ½ cup powdered sugar to 1 tablespoon milk. You’ll stir it together for 1 minute, until all the lumps dissolve and it’s a drizzle-able texture. This makes for ¼ cup powdered sugar icing.
  • Drizzle on cookies or muffins! That’s it! You’ll need to make sure that the cookies or muffins are fully to room temperature, otherwise the icing will melt. And we have an easy trick for drizzling…

The best way to drizzle icing? With a FORK.

You’d think the easiest way to drizzle powdered sugar icing would be with a spoon. But actually, drizzling with a spoon can result in a chunky drizzle. Because you can load quite a bit of icing onto a spoon, it come out really fast and you don’t have great control over the drizzle.

The best way to drizzle icing is using a fork! This gives you the best control and helps you make a perfectly thin lines. Of course, you can also pipe icing using a pastry bag. But this powdered sugar icing is the type meant for drizzling on cookies, muffins, and Bundt cakes: and using a fork is the easiest way to do it!

How to make powdered sugar icing vegan?

You can make this powdered sugar icing vegan as well! Substitute your favorite non-dairy milk for the dairy milk. This includes: almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk. The important thing to remember is: almond milk especially has a more watery texture than dairy milk. So start with a little less milk than you would with dairy, and add just enough to get it to a drizzle-able consistency.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk OR ½ to 1 tablespoon almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk for vegan

Instructions

  1. Stir together the confectioners’ sugar and milk until a smooth sauce forms and all lumps are dissolved. (If you’re using dairy free milk, start with ½ tablespoon and use just enough until it comes to a drizzleable consistency: most non-dairy milks aren’t as thick as standard milk.)
  2. To drizzle on cookies or cakes, make sure they are at room temperature or the glaze will melt. Dip a fork into the glaze and drizzle in a zigzag pattern. Let sit at room temperature until the glaze is dry, about 15 minutes.
