Seasoned salt

Why make a seasoned salt recipe when you can easily buy it in the store? First of all it’s just plain fun! You probably already have most of these spices in your cabinet already. But more importantly: many store bought seasoned salt recipes contain MSG. So why not make it at home? It’s an all-natural spice blend that you can use for everything from grilled fish to roasted veggies. And it takes 5 minutes to make. Once you try it, it will become your go-to a substitute for seasoned salt from the store (it has for us!).

Seasoning salt

What is in seasoned salt?

What is seasoned salt? Sometimes called seasoning salt, it’s a blend of spices, herbs, and salt that has lots of variations. Lawry’s Seasoned Salt is the most common brand that’s available. Here are the ingredients in this seasoned salt recipe, all of which which commonly appear in seasoning salt blends:

  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Smoked paprika (or substitute regular paprika)
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Turmeric

Using smoked paprika brings in a lightly smoky flavor that takes it up a notch. Use it if you can find it; it’s sometimes labeled as pimentón. Alex and I use smoked paprika all the time in our recipes; it’s especially perfect for vegetarian and vegan recipes to bring in a meaty element. So we’d highly advise investing in a jar!

Many recipes call for you to whisk together the spices, then pour them into a jar. But why bother dirtying a bowl and whisk? Here’s our method: Simply place all the spices into a jar, seal the jar, and shake! The spices distribute evenly in just a few seconds.
