The perfect easy and healthy drink, this lime water recipe with mint looks beautiful and tastes extraordinarily refreshing.
Looking for a healthy drink that tastes amazing? We’ve been on a years-long quest to find drink alternatives to soda that are thirst quenching and healthy at the same time. So may we present to you, our new favorite drink: lime water! This infused water tastes fantastic and feels fancy, even though it takes only 5 minutes of hands on time. Ready to get started?
How to make lime water
Lime water couldn’t be simpler to make! Of course in this recipe, we wanted to add a little flair (as per usual), so we’ve also added some fresh mint from our garden. The mint adds an aromatic flavor that’s a fitting balance to the lime. You could omit if you’d like: but we’d recommend it if at all possible!
To make the lime water, here’s all you need to do:
- Thinly slice a lime. Place the lime and fresh mint in the bottom of a pitcher.
- Use a wooden spoon to muddle (lightly mash) the limes and mint to release their juices.
- Add 8 cups cold water and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving.
Does the flavor of lime water improve over time?
Yes, the flavor of lime water gets better over time. It’s great after refrigerating for 1 hour, and even better after refrigerating for 2 to 3 hours. You’ll find the flavor is still great after refrigerating for 1 day.
After more than 1 day in the refrigerator, however, the flavor does become a little bitter due to the lime. We’d recommend drinking this lime water within about 1 day of making it. This is easy if you’re serving it at a party: and if not, a good way to motivate yourself to drink more! You could also make a smaller batch if desired.
Why drink lime water?
There are lots of sources that claim certain health benefits of drinking lime water or lemon water. Since we’re not health care professionals we can’t speak to the exact claims. But what we will say is: drinking lots of water is always a good thing! And drinking lime water scented with a little mint makes it seem like something special: more than just tap water. It makes lime water a great substitute for soda or other sugary drinks: it has no sugar at all: just fruit, herbs and water!
Wondering about acids like lemon juice and lime juice eroding on the enamel of your teeth? If you’re drinking lime water occasionally, this should not be a problem. If you’re worried about lemon or lime juice eroding your tooth enamel over time, you can drink your water through a straw to avoid contact with your teeth. You can also use less lime overall.
How to grow fresh herbs
This water uses a handful of fresh mint: and it’s so much more fun to grow it yourself! We grow herbs all summer long, and it’s one of the most satisfying things to run out to the garden and harvest a few herbs. You don’t even need garden space: you can just grow herbs in pots as long as you have a sunny ledge! And adding herbs to your cooking is a healthy flavor addition, without adding calories.
