Oregano tea

Did you know you can make herbal tea with fresh herbs and boiling water? Enter this oregano tea. Fresh oregano transforms in 5 minutes into an earthy, fresh drink that’s positively restorative. All you need is a few sprigs and boiling water! When Alex and I tried this for the first time, we were astonished by the flavor. It’s a fun way to make DIY tea, and it makes drinking your daily water much more interesting. Here’s what to do!

How to make oregano tea

All you need is two ingredients for oregano tea: fresh oregano and water! While oregano is best known for flavoring Italian recipes, its flavor lends intrigue to tea. This recipe is best in the summer when you’ve got fresh herbs growing in your garden or in pots. But you can still make it in the winter using fresh oregano from the grocery store. Here’s how to make oregano tea:

  1. Boil: Boil a pot of water. We use an electric tea kettle (that we also use for our morning coffee).
  2. Harvest herbs: Add 2 large leafy oregano sprigs — see the photo for the amount we used.
  3. Steep: Fill up a mug with the boiling water. Allow to stand for 5 minutes, then enjoy!

  1. The herb in the photo looks more like mint than oregano. My oregano looks much different. Are there different types or oregano?

    1. There are different types of oregano. This one has larger, almost fuzzy leaves. The tastes are similar, but can have varying levels of spiciness.

  2. Think I have Cuban oregano (Vick’s plant). It’s strong tasting and grows like a weed. Made oregano oil w it, going to try tea.
