Lavender Latte

Looking for a cozy latte with a unique twist? Try a Lavender Latte! This delicious drink is delicately floral, with just enough lavender flavor to permeate but not overwhelm each sip. It’s creamy, cozy and absolutely delicious: like the coffee version of a London Fog tea latte. This latte’s on the sweeter side, which is needed to accentuate the floral flavor. If you’re a lavender lover, this one’s a winner.

What’s in a lavender latte?

A Lavender Latte is a coffee drink made with espresso, steamed milk, and lavender syrup. It’s easy to make lavender syrup at home: all you’ll need is a few minutes, some sugar, and some lavender buds. Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this drink:

  • Espresso
  • Whole milk
  • Lavender simple syrup

It comes together as a sweet drink, with a floral flavor that’s forward but not overly strong. But beware: if you think you might not like lavender, you could be on the fence with this drink. It has a bit of a flowery soap vibe. We recommend trying this drink only if you’re a professed lavender lover.

How to make a lavender latte: basic steps

This cozy Lavender Latte follows the steps of any hot latte, but you’ll need to add a step for the simple syrup. Here’s what to do:

  • Step 1: Make the lavender simple syrup.
  • Step 2: Make a double shot of espresso and mix it with lavender simple syrup.
  • Step 3: Steam or froth the milk.
  • Step 4: Pour the steamed milk into the lavender espresso.

Use fresh or dried lavender blossoms!

You can use either fresh lavender blossoms or dried to make lavender simple syrup. Dried lavender is easy to find at the grocery store in the spice aisle. It lasts for up to 1 year in a cool, dry place like your spice drawer.

But if you happen to be growing lavender in your garden or run across fresh lavender blossoms at a farmers market, they’re perfect for this latte! You’ll need just the blossoms, not the green leafy sprigs.

Espresso methods

The two main tasks in a Lavender Latte, outside of the syrup, are making the espresso and steaming the milk. For homemade lattes, there are several ways to make espresso with a machine and without a machine. Here are a few of our favorite methods:

  • Espresso machine: The best way to make espresso is with a countertop espresso machine: it makes the best espresso, hands down! But it’s pretty pricey.
  • Manual espresso maker:  Without a machine, you can use a small manual espresso maker: it’s cheaper and portable!
  • French press: French press Espresso has great flavor.
  • Moka Pot: You can also make Moka Pot coffee (aka Bialetti) for coffee with a dark flavor that can stand in for espresso.

How to froth or steam the milk

The other main task when it comes to a Lavender Latte? Steaming or frothing the milk! We recommend making this drink with whole milk since it has the best richness for steaming and frothing. If you want a vegan latte, use oat milk: it’s the best non-dairy milk for frothing! Whether you froth or steam depends on your equipment:

  • Steam the milk (espresso machine): If you’ve got an espresso machine, this is the way to go! It’s a bit technical, but the result is rich, creamy microfoam. Go to How to Steam Milk.
  • Froth the milk (without a machine): There are several ways to froth milk. The best method is a hand frother, but you can also use a French press or whisk. Go to How to Froth Milk.

Description

This lavender latte is creamy and delicately floral! It’s easy to make at home, scented with lavender simple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 espresso shots (2 ounces)
  • 4 ounces (½ cup) fresh whole milk or oat milk* (double for two servings when steaming)
  • 1 tablespoon** Lavender Simple Syrup, plus lavender buds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the espresso: Make the espresso using an espresso machine, manual espresso maker, French press, or Moka Pot. Go to How to Make Espresso for instructions.
  2. Stir in the lavender syrup: Stir the Lavender Simple Syrup into the espresso.
  3. Steam or froth the milk (double batch): Steam the milk with an espresso machine, or heat and then froth the milk using your method of choice (milk frother, French press, whisk or covered jar). It’s easiest to steam or froth 1 cup of milk for 2 drinks. Go to How to Steam Milk or How to Froth Milk for details on each.
  4. Serve: Pour the milk into the center of the espresso, ending with light foam (using half the steamed or frothed milk for 1 drink). If desired, garnish with extra lavender buds.

Notes

*Whole milk works best; milk that is a few weeks old may not froth. You can also use oat milk for a vegan latte.

**You can use slightly less lavender syrup for a less sweet drink, but the lavender flavor is hard to perceive. Feel free to sweeten to taste if desired!
