When this happens, you need to add more liquid: but not so much that the smoothie becomes watery! Here are some tricks to blending up the perfect fruit smoothie:

  • Use a good blender. Really, your smoothie is only as good as your blender. A weak one just doesn’t cut it! Get a high quality blender and if you have the resources, a high speed blender is even more powerful.
  • Place the fresh fruit and liquid near the blades. In this smoothie, you’ll start with the fresh apple and banana, then add the water, then place the frozen items on top. Layering in this fashion prevents the blades from getting stuck initially.
  • Use a smoothie tamper. Some blenders come with a smoothie tamper, a long stick you can place through the hole in the top of the blender to help the smoothie blend. It’s not necessary but can be helpful.

Add-ins & variations

This healthy fruit smoothie is pretty perfect as is: but you can always mix it up with tasty additions! Here are a few options:

  • 1 large green apple
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple or mango
  • 2 cups mixed berries
  • 10 ice cubes
  • 1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup, honey or agave syrup

Instructions

  1. Core the apple and cut it into chunks, leaving the skin on. Place it into the blender, followed by the banana, broken into chunks.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth, stopping and scraping as necessary.

  1. I’m trying to make smoothies with almond milk With frozen strawberries and bananas with the Bullet blender, not sure how much of each I should put in there? And how much ice? Ty.

  2. This recipe sounds delicious but I do not like bananas at all! What would be a good replacement for the banana or could I completely omit it?

    1. This one should work without the banana — the apple should help to provide some of the creamy texture. You may need to adjust the liquid slightly. Good luck!

  3. If I wanted to add oatmeal to my smoothie, how much should I add. I am just getting started making smoothies. I am a diabetic and have Chronic Kidney Disease.

    Also, can I cut the recipe in half? I want to use more for supper than breakfast.
