Avocado banana smoothie

Want an easy way to eat your fruits & veggies? Try this creamy, luscious avocado banana smoothie! It’s vibrant, green and the perfect way to get a big dose of nutrients. This one’s a spin on our Avocado Smoothie that’s even more banana-centric. It’s got tropical flavor and a beautifully light texture. In fact, avocado is one of the best ways to add creaminess to a smoothie outside of a banana! We love making smoothies of all colors and flavors, and this one was a new favorite over here. Here’s what you need to make it!

Ingredients in this avocado banana smoothie

This avocado banana smoothie has the best creamy texture because it features lots of creamy fruits. Banana adds fantastic texture to smoothies: in fact, we use it in almost every smoothie we’ve made. Avocado also adds richness and creaminess from its smooth texture. So a smoothie with double the bananas and avocado? It’s luscious and perfect. Here’s what you need:

  • Ripe avocado (skip this recipe if you don’t have a ripe one!)
  • Ripe bananas
  • Baby spinach or kale
  • Frozen pineapple
  • Ice
  • Lemon juice (optional, but has the best flavor!)

As you can see, this avocado banana smoothie is a vegan smoothie recipe: it has no yogurt or milk like other smoothies you might see. But you can add yogurt if you like: see below!

How to safely pit an avocado

This avocado banana smoothie recipe uses only ½ an avocado, making it perfect for using the other half of one you’ve already used. Ever wondered the best way to pit an avocado? It’s important to practice safe avocado cutting techniques! Here’s the best way we’ve found:

  1. Cut lengthwise around the avocado. Twist the two halves to separate them.
  2. Place a towel in your hand and put the avocado on top. With a gentle but quick motion, tap the knife into the avocado pit.
  3. Don’t remove the avocado pit with your hand! Instead, pull the cutting board close to your body, then place the pit against the far edge of the cutting board and pull back to release it from the knife.
  4. Use a large spoon to scoop out the avocado from the peel.

A trick to blending!

Here’s a trick to blending this avocado banana smoothie: or really any smoothie recipe! It’s easiest for the blender to have the soft items towards the bottom near the blender blades. If you start with the frozen items, the blades of the blender can get stuck. Here’s what to do:

  • Blend the soft, room temperature items first. In this case, that means the avocado, bananas, and greens. Blend those first with water.
  • Then add the frozen items and blend until a smooth puree forms. This avoids getting the blender blades stuck by frozen fruit and ice.

Smoothie storage

Smoothies are best eaten immediately. But you can also make it in advance! This avocado banana smoothie lasts up to 1 day, stored in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. It may separate, which is perfectly natural. Just shake it up and you’re good to go!

Add more protein to an avocado banana smoothie

This avocado banana smoothie base recipe doesn’t have much protein: it’s all fruits and veggies! To load it up with protein, here are some ideas:

  • Greek yogurt. Add ½ cup Greek yogurt and reduce to ¼ cup water. Add more water as you blend. ½ cup Greek yogurt adds a whopping 17 grams protein to this smoothie!
  • Chia seeds. Amp the plant-based protein and fiber with chia seeds! Two tablespoons of chia seeds add 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber (see this Chia Seed Smoothie).
  • Almond or cashew butter. Add a dollop of nut butter for another protein adder! Add 1 tablespoon for 4 grams protein. Here we recommend almond or cashew butter: peanut butter can be a little too strong.

Avocado nutrition

Why eat avocados? The humble avocado is packed with good for you ingredients. It’s most popular for avocado toast and guacamole: but this smoothie works too! Here are a few nutritional benefits you’ll get:

  • Full of heart healthy “good” fats. Avocados are full of monounsaturated oleic acid, a heart-healthy fatty acid.
  • Rich in fiber. Avocados have lots of fiber; one serving has 7 grams or about 25% your daily value.
  • Loaded with vitamins and nutrients. They’re also filled with a long list of vitamins.

This avocado banana smoothie is…

Vegetarian, vegan, plant-based, dairy-free and gluten-free.
