Got extra melon on hand? Try this refreshing Cantaloupe Smoothie! This one is lightly sweet and delicately fruity, balancing the melon with frozen pineapple and creamy Greek yogurt. We don’t always have this sweet fruit on hand, but when we do: this is how we use up leftovers! It’s bursting with flavor and takes just minutes to blend up. All you need are four ingredients, plus ice.
Ingredients in a cantaloupe smoothie
Melon is unique in smoothies because of the texture it produces: it becomes mostly liquid when blended. Instead of adding thickness to the smoothie texture like frozen berries or banana, melon becomes watery. So you’ll need to combine it with another fruit and ice to make a thick puree! Greek yogurt is also perfect for adding creaminess. Here’s what you’ll need for this cantaloupe smoothie:
- Cantaloupe
- Frozen pineapple
- Greek yogurt
- Orange juice
- Ice
Why to add Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt is ideal for smoothies: it adds a creamy texture to the puree and a good dose of protein. You can use other types of yogurt if you don’t have it on hand: preferably plain yogurt without added sweeteners. However, this smoothie is only lightly sweet so it could handle a flavored yogurt if that’s all you have.
Want a vegan or dairy free cantaloupe smoothie? Just substitute oat milk, coconut milk or vegan yogurt for the Greek yogurt! Then consider one of the protein adders below.
Other protein adders
Want to add more protein to this cantaloupe smoothie? This is a good move if you’re planning to use it as a meal replacement, like for breakfast. Typically we recommend nut butter, but that would compete with the delicate melon flavor here. Here are a few options we’d try:
- Chia seeds. Add protein and fiber with chia seeds! 2 tablespoons chia seeds adds 4 grams protein and 11 grams fiber. (See Chia Seed Smoothie.)
- Vanilla protein powder: Protein powder also works here. Here’s the protein powder we like: it has a good flavor that’s not too artificial.
More fruit smoothies
Love the tropical flavor of melon in a smoothie, or prefer citrus or berry flavors? Here are a few more fruit smoothies to choose from:
- Try a Watermelon Smoothie or Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
- Opt for a Honeydew Smoothie
- Grab a citrusy Grapefruit Smoothie or Orange Smoothie
- Grab a Vanilla Date, Almond Butter or Cherry Smoothie
- Go for Strawberry Peach Smoothie, Peach Mango Smoothie or Banana Peach Smoothie
This cantaloupe smoothie recipe is…
Vegetarian and gluten-free. For vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free, substitute oat milk or vegan yogurt.

I made the cantaloupe smoothie. I had home grown cantaloupe. I cut the recipe by 1/2 since I just wanted one serving. I used frozen pineapple, greek plain yogurt, and apple juice. Unfortunately my cantaloupe chunks were really big. Next time I’ll cut them up more. I didn’t need any ice. This was so refreshing, cooling and delicious!!! Thanks for the recipe. Next time I’ll add just a bit of honey or sugar. This time it was more like a sorbet! YUM.
