How to cut cabbage step by step

Step 1

How to cut cabbage / shredded cabbage | Remove outer leaves

Remove any outer layers of the cabbage that seem tough or are not fresh, and discard them.

Step 2

How to cut cabbage | Remove root

With a large chef’s knife, slice off the root of the cabbage.

Step 3

How to cut cabbage | Cut in half through stem

Cut the cabbage in half through the stem.

Step 4

How to cut cabbage | Cut into quarters

Cut the cabbage into quarters.

Step 5

How to cut cabbage | Remove the root

Remove the root of the cabbage by cutting it out diagonally.

How to cut cabbage / shredded cabbage | Thinly slice in short direction

Thinly slice the cabbage in the short direction, using a circular motion with the knife. Since typically shredded cabbage for coleslaw doesn’t need to be in long pieces, slicing it in the short direction makes it easier to eat!

  1. In your Howto on cutting cabbage you mention removing the “root”. It is the root-end, yes, for sure — but the root is long gone. You are referring to what is commonly termed the “core”. Tomatoes have a core at the stem-end likewise. FYI.
