Honeydew smoothie

Here’s one of the most refreshing smoothies we’ve had: a honeydew smoothie! Honeydew melon is an uncommon ingredient when it comes to smoothies, but this recipe will make you an instant fan. It has a beautiful delicately sweet flavor and a frothy texture. It’s hydrating and healthy: and the melon flavor really does shine! Accentuated with a hint of honey and vanilla, it’s super sippable. Alex and I couldn’t stop drinking it. Here’s all about how to make it!

What’s in this honeydew smoothie?

This honeydew smoothie has just a handful of healthy ingredients that come together into a hydrating drink. Of course, the star of the show is honeydew melon! Alex and I don’t often buy it, but Alex grabbed one the other day on a whim. After we’d eaten a bunch of it, we needed an idea for the leftovers. Enter: the smoothie! Here’s what to blend up:

  • Ripe honeydew melon: you’ll use about ½ large
  • Frozen pineapple: this brings an icy element and helps to thicken the melon
  • Greek yogurt for creaminess; see vegan variations below
  • Honey or maple syrup to enhance the sweetness
  • Vanilla brings just the right nuance

A note on the texture: it’s frothy, not thick!

Smoothies with melon (like our Watermelon Smoothie) generally have a looser texture because melon is becomes thin when it’s blended. Of course, you could freeze melon to get a thicker texture: but who has the time to do that?

This honeydew smoothie turns out more frothy than thick and icy. But it’s a fantastic texture and has just the right amount of body! In this recipe, the frozen pineapple helps to thicken a bit while still letting the melon shine through.

Honeydew smoothie variations

You can mix it up to customize this honeydew smoothie! Here are a few variations we thought of (of course, you can get creative!):

  • Vegan variation: Use coconut milk or your favorite brand of vegan yogurt in place of Greek yogurt, and maple syrup in place of honey.
  • Honeydew mint smoothie: Add a few leaves of fresh mint to the body of the smoothie: it will add herbaceous flavor and a more vibrant green color.
  • Honeydew cucumber smoothie: Add a few slices of peeled cucumber for a spa-like vibe.

Is honeydew melon healthy?

Yes! Honeydew melon boasts a host of health benefits. After researching these, I’m ready to drink more of these honeydew smoothies in my everyday! Here are some highlights (source):

  • It’s full of water and electrolytes. In order to properly hydrate, your body needs not just water but electrolytes too. Honeydew melon is about 90% water and contains electrolytes, such as potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium.
  • It’s full of Vitamin C, which can enhance skin health. Eating honeydew melon may support healthy skin due to its high vitamin C content.
